The Colorado River carved 300 metres of Entrada and Navajo sandstone below Moab without ever leaving Utah's high desert — and it did most of that work in the dark, grain by grain, over five million years. The water here runs opaque with silt. That silt is the canyon, dissolved and in transit.
Moab sits at the northern hinge of the Colorado Plateau, where the river bends west toward its confluence with the Green. Ute and Paiute peoples wintered in these bottomlands for centuries. Mormon settlers attempted a mission at the crossing in 1855 and abandoned it within months. A ferry took its place, then a bridge in 1912, and Highway 191 followed the same natural gap in the rock that everyone before had used. The road to Arches National Park still departs from that crossing. Uranium prospecting boomed in the 1950s and emptied out again; the town turned to red-rock tourism and never turned back.
